This type of footstool, also known simply as a stool, is used as a short stepladder or to support a person's (usually a child's) feet that do not reach the floor when seated.

 


From footstools to Adirondack style chairs polywood outdoor furniture is not made to be cheap patio furniture. Its heavy duty construction of materials designed to last several years, puts it into the category of quality outdoor furnishings.

Small footstools are often used to accent upholstered chairs in living rooms or dens. They take the place of larger ottomans and may be wood or feature a padded surface. Most living rooms and dens feature accessory chairs and occasional tables.

Headboard: An upright structure rising above the mattress at the head of the bed.

- DO tuck a footstool beneath a built-in or freestanding makeup table to provide compact seating in tight quarters. A bench is also an ideal choice to set beside the tub, gracefully holding towels or toiletries within arm's reach.

A single side chair, window treatment, or small upholstered piece such as a footstool can make a great focal point when done in a bold orange fabric (patterned fabrics such as stripes and geometric prints are particularly effective).

A leather recliner chair paired with footstool creates a zone in which relax with a choice from the vast book collection from the bank of extensive floating shelves.

Parsons table: A simple, squared-off table with legs and apron of equal widths. The name is taken from the Parsons School of Design, where the table was developed during the 1950s.

Rustic American-country furnishings (the Adirondack style) featured applied-bark headboards, deer-hoof footstools and twig rocking chairs. Wall decorations included mounted deer heads and woven snow shoes.

Ottoman sleeper may work like a footstool as well as a foldout single bed.

We remodeled our kitchen when my daughter was 3 years old. She needed to be able to reach the sink, but we decided that a footstool would constantly be in the way. Instead, we came up with the idea of a pullout step under the sink.

I'm sitting in my home office as I write this column, and around me I see chaos. Unopened boxes; piles of notes; a small TV on a footstool; too much paper on a too-small, cherry-wood writing table that actually belongs in the bedroom.

Use more classic fabrics on the larger pieces of furniture, and save the fussy and textured fabrics for the smaller pieces - footstools or throw pillows.
