Wood Furring Strip Ceilings
Furrings are strips of metal or wood attached directly with an old ceiling (perpendicular to ceiling joists) onto which ceiling tiles are clipped or stapled. This section aids in the installation of wood furrings.

 


Furring Strip Materials:
Instead of buying 1x3's for furring strips, I bought some good-quality 1x6's from Home Depot and ripped them in half on my table saw, so the final width was just under 2-3/4".

Furring strips- Strips of wood, often 1 X 2 and used to shim out and provide a level fastening surface for a wall or ceiling.

Furring Strip
A piece of material usually wood, but can be metal, that is placed on the outer surface of the building to provide a surface to fasten the siding too. It is also used to straighten or correct surfaces that are not flat.

Furring strips should also be used in a shower that has a shower pan running up the sides. These will make the surface even for the backerboard.

Shim the furring strips to create a flat plane for the dry wall. (Is this the point where the author makes a bad pun about doing the shimmy?) Start with the strip nearest the corner and use a long level to see if it's plumb.

Position the second furring strip so that the distance between the center of the strip and the wall is the width of your border tile.

At a front door, a furring strip lifts the door trim enough to let siding panels tuck in behind.

Furring - the fastening of thin strips of wood to fascia board at the roofs perimeter. The purpose of furring strip is to prevent water from running directly off the drip edge onto the fascia, which can cause rot.
