Betty City: Putnam County, NY Question: I wired my new cooktop using #12, 2 wire Romex with groud wire. The installation instructions say that it requires a #10 ground wire.

Adding A Ground Wire To Old Circuits
I live in Colorado in a house about 40 - 45 years old. I am remodeling the basement and the outlets and the light fixtures are ungrounded.

Ground Wire
Also called a grounding conductor, it connects an electrical device to the electrical ground.
Grounding
Method that connects all electrical facilities to the ground.

Ground Wire - The wire that carries electrical energy to a receptacle or other device in contrast to a neutral, which carries electricity away again, normally the black wire.
Grounding Rod - Rod used to ground an electrical panel.

Ground Wire
1. Electrical wire which will safely conduct electricity from a structure into the ground. 2. A wire attached to dissipate electrostatic charge in airless spraying.
Grounded ...

Bring the ground wire (usually, this wire is exposed copper, or has green insulation) around the grounding screw so that it is attached to the fixture.

Count all ground wires combined as one.
Count all clamps combined as one.
Count devices like switches, receptacles and timers that mount in the box as two. (Most light fixtures that fit over boxes do not have to be counted.) ...

Hook up the ground wire to the fixture's base plate. Strip the hot and neutral wires and secure them to the respective track terminals.

You mean the ground wire from the fan, right?
If your house has modern wiring there should be a bare copper wire in the box or perhaps several twisted together and finally if the box is a metal box connected to a ground screw on the box.

To make sure the ground wire is properly installed you can check it using a multimeter set to test resistance. Touch one end of the multimeter to the metal body of the dryer and the other to the ground prong of the plug.

All ground wires should be properly secured to the ground wire or the neutral/ground buss, depending on the panel.
Neutral wires should be properly secured to the neutral wire buss.

Instead of running a ground wire, or connecting a ground connection to the outlet, you will rely on the GFI function to provide the personal protection. It is not the same thing, but for most instances it is better.

Theoretically, when a ground fault occurs the electricity is supposed to travel via the ground wire to the ground source not through the body. This theory is valid to some extent. However, if moisture is present the facts change.

Every solar module has a predrilled and labeled hole in the frame for a ground wire, and you should use a bare solid-copper ground wire to connect each module.

Ground wires also lead to a neutral bar. Power runs through each fuse or breaker and then out of the panel via a hot wire to whatever receptacles, lights, or appliances are on the circuit.

The cable is then connected to the service panel, which should be located within 1 foot of where the cable enters the building. The ground wire need not be insulated.

Connect the supply wires to both the fan housing and the light. First the ground wires, then the white common wires and finally the black and red supply wires.
Plug the light into its outlet and connect the rest of the globe.

Watch Tim demonstrate this method on his Underground Wire Tunnel Video.
This chisel point was made by cutting the pipe at a 45 degree angle.

Whether direct-wiring the power source or installing an outlet plug, the operation is the same. On the bottom of the disposal, firmly secure the ground wire. Then connect like-color wires: white to white, black to black.

Connect the ground wires as illustrated. If you are using a metal box, attach them to the box as well as the light fixture.
Knock out an opening in the outlet box, and continue the new wiring as illustrated.

Connect fixture and house wires to the low voltage motion sensors by making sure you connect color to color, that is, black wires to black and white wires to white. House ground wires should be connected to the new junction box of the detector.

This system is suitable for installations requiring large motors. It consists of three hot wires and one ground wire. The voltage in each hot wire is out of phase with the others by 1/3 of a cycle, as if produced by 3 different generators.

Use wire nuts to connect the motion detector wires to the electrical box wires; fastening black wire to black wire, and white wire to white wire. A ground wire is not normally required, so fasten it on the house circuit to the electrical box.

GROUND SYSTEM - The connection of current-carrying neutral wire to the grounding terminal in the main switch which in turn is connected to a water pipe. The neutral wire is called the ground wire.

Connect the ground wires from the box, the fan and the power supply together with a wirenut, there may be a pigtail wire on the fan which you attach to the box with a screw.

The third prong is for the ground wire.
Grout - The material into which ceramic tile and pavers is set, and which fills the space between tiles.
