Handrails and guardrails are sturdy handholds and barriers that follow the outside, and sometimes inside, perimeter of the stairs and landings.

First I tested the fit of each handrail section. There's no point in fighting with a section of railing that is too tight or too loose.

The handrail is then attached to the newel post with more lag bolts, but the hole for the bolts is drilled first to avoid splitting the wood. A countersink bit needs to be used so the hole and screw can be hidden with a small wooden cap.

That handrail bugged me for years, as I went about larger projects. The last straw came when the rail loosened and threatened to come off the wall entirely.

HANDRAIL Railing which serves as a guard and which is intended to be grasped by the hand to serve as a support.
HARDBOARD A timber sheet product manufactured of compressed wood fibre.
HARDWOOD A pored timber.

Handrail - A rail fixed at hand height along the top of balusters or posts to provide both support to, or assist with, the movement of a person.

Handrail - The part of the balustrade that is grasped.
Hardboard - Manufactured pressed-wood panels; hardboard is specifically rejected by some manufacturers as an acceptable substrate for resilient floors.

Handrails that don't run the full length of a staircase can be dangerous -- someone may assume that the stairs end where the handrail ends and miss the last step. If necessary, consider extending or replacing the handrail.

Handrails should be designed to compliment the staircase itself and any adjacent trim. When designing a handrail, picture yourself holding onto it and sliding your hand along its entire length.

Slip the handrail channel over the mounting strip. Mark evenly-spaced screw positions on painter's tape along the railing that do not coincide with screws in the mounting strip. Countersink screw holes and drive in wood screws to secure the handrail.

Are there handrails on both sides of stairway?
Is there grasping space for both knuckles and fingers on railings?

Baluster-One of a series of small pillars that is attached to and runs between the stairs and the handrails. The spacing between the balusters should be less than 4 inches to prevent small children from getting stuck between the balusters.

The material used to construct the staircase, treads, balustrade and handrails. Timber is the obvious choice for many, but polished metal or a combination of the two can enhance a contemporary design.

Handrails next to the toilet make it easier to get on and off of. A shower stall that is flush with the rest of the floor is also recommended. Otherwise, a tub should also have handrails going all the way around.

To find the angle cut of the handrail for the stair, mark on the 8" side of the ratio 8:10" on the framing square. Set the power saw to that angle and cut with care. Height of stair handrail is about 36" to 38".
