Measure your bed frame and decide on how wide and tall you wish to make the headboard. It should be 2-3 inches wider than your mattress. As for height, at least 18" of the headboard should be visible from the mattress.
Upgrade a plain wooden headboard with paint. First sand all surfaces and coat with a water-base sealer. Using a household trim brush, base-coat the entire headboard with white satin paint. Next, apply a stripe and dot border.

How to Choose a Headboard to Complement your Bed
Have you ever noticed that you can have any type of bed, but the presence of a fantastic headboard can give dimension to the entire bedroom?
Scrolls: Scrolls are the supportive and decorative members shaped like a scroll or curl which are connected to posts, rails, and each other on many brass (especially traditional) headboards and footboards.
Cottage furniture is true to the Victorian style in that the beds have high (an excess of six feet or more) and lavishly decorated headboards.
The posts are 4x4 (not pressure treated), the post caps are 5/4" , the frames are 2x lumber and the slats in the headboard and footboard are are 3/4" pine boards.
The first step to assembly is to drill holes in the headboard and footboard 4" off the ground. Next, drill a pilot hole in each end of the rails; screw the rails to the head and footboards at the 4" mark. The bed is almost finished.
The headboards are covered in a chocolate brown velveteen fabric. They subtly “sparkle' when one walks by, thanks to iridescent threading, and are reminiscent of a twinkling night sky.
Tables, chairs, desk and headboards can all be refurbished by using a can of spray paint or stain. Of course depending on the condition of the piece you may need to use some elbow grease to sand away the old surface.
Try your local custom picture frame shop for a new headboard. Pick a frame that suits your current dcor, remembering that you can chose your finish.

You can also create custom headboards out of simple plywood. Add some cotton batting and fabric to create a more relaxed ambiance. If you are not into headboards, most modern types of bedrooms use wall hangings. It adds a lavish feel to the space.
That said, one simple fix is simply to make sure that your headboard is not resting against the wall. Breaking the connection between the wall and headboard will go a long ways towards quieting down your bedroom.
