Building headers with carpentry-framing for windows and doors
Part of carpentry-framing is the use of headers. Wherever you have a door or window, you will want to put a header to distribute the weight from the upper level to the floor.

Headers, Beams and Wall Sensors
Headers and beams size and load information is available in a free booklet. How to insert beams into a frame wall is illustrated, and a nifty electronic sensor can help you "see" what's behind your wall. read more..

Headers - Double wood pieces supporting joists in a floor or double wood members placed on edge over windows and doors to transfer the roof and floor weight to the studs
Hearth - The inner floor of a fireplace.

Using Headers That Are Just Big Enough
The blue shaded areas in the drawing below highlight some of the main components used in the framing of a typical window opening when a header is used that does not reside against the top plate.

Headers sized correctly - trimmers in place. Bearing
Wind bracing - all exterior corners, 25′ on center, secured, no "K" bracing, end gables

2) Install headers
At each end of the opening install half of a double header. Nail up the end of your cut joist, and then add the second board of the header. (Fig. 2)

A course of headers laid on their edges instead of flat side; rows of brick laid on edge especially used for the ring of an arch.
Rows
The number of lengthwise yarn tufts in one inch of Axminster or Chenille carpet; compare with Wires.

Brick Masonry (Bond) The arrangement or overlapping of brick, blocks or stones to tie a masonry wall together longitudinally stretchers and transversely (headers) and of great importance to the strength of the wall.

The roof opening is framed with headers-framing lumber run horizontally across the opening, securely nailed to the rafters to support the structure. Headers are cut from lumber the same size as the rafters.

Larger windows may require headers made of two-by eights or two-by-tens. But what if you want to install a beam in place of a load-bearing wall? So-called "glue-lam" beams are sold commercially by the linear foot, and they're not cheap.

The reason you should care about headers is that they give you air and light. The wider the header above the window, the larger the window. Thus, more air and light.

Headers are needed for conventional framing, and if trusses have to be cut, an engineered reinforcement system may be required. Areas over garages are frequently used for storage of personal items; possibly overloading joists or trusses.

In Flemish bond, a course which alternates headers and stretchers is laid. Then, a course is laid on top, with the headers in the previous course being centered under the stretchers in the new course.

Remove the existing wall studs to clear space (leaving the exterior sheathing intact) for the king studs, headers, sills (on windows) and trimmer studs needed to frame the new rough opening. Dimensions for the new unit are supplied by the manufacturer.

These involve the stretcher bond already mentioned plus headers (bricks laid across the width of the wall). English garden wall bond is really a modification of another bond and it consists of one course of headers to three of stretchers.

Attach Temporary Ledgers to the Headers Just Installed
Clamp temporary ledgers into position on the ceiling side of the pre-assembled stairway opening.

The flow tubes can be routed in parallel, using inlet and outlet headers, or in a serpentine pattern. A serpentine pattern eliminates the possibility of header leaks and ensures uniform flow.

You see these headers over all windows and doors -- they give the wall enough strength over the window or door to support the roof.

Step 14: Once all 4 corner boards are secured in place, measure, cut and install 2x8 headers (board "B"). (Temporarily nail in place) Secure each corner using a 3/8" x 4" carriage bolts, with 2 bolts in each end of each header.

Joist hangers: A metal brackets used to connect joists to the adjoining headers or support beams. Used when joist have to be butted up to support beams or headers rather than resting on top.

The timber wall frame is made of normal 90 x 45mm timber however over the windows the support beams or headers are all LVL engineered timber. If these beams were normal timber they would need to be a lot larger for the strength rating.

Do I have to fix/modify the floor, add studs, modify the walls, headers... etc.,

Use 2 x 4 stock and 1/2-in. plywood to build the window headers. Unlike the door opening, each window opening requires a horizontal 2 x 4 that's supported by cripple studs.

Flemish Bond
A bond consisting of headers and stretchers alternating in every course and laid so that they always break the joint.

TRIMMER: The longer floor or ceiling-framing member around a rectangular opening into which headers are joined; both headers and trimmers are doubled.

Flemish bond (appareil flamand, m.) In masonry, a bond consisting of alternate headers and stretchers in every course, each header being placed in the middle of the stretchers, in the courses above and below.

Bond Dutch - In masonry, a bond having the courses made up alternately of headers and stretchers.
Bond English - Brickwork laid with alternating courses, each consisting entirely of headers or stretchers.

A nonbearing wall, or partition, acts as a screen or enclosure; hence, the headers in it are often parallel to the joists of the floor above.
In general, studs, like joists, are spaced 16 inches on center.

'''English Bond''' English Bond is a brick laying pattern in which each layer consists of either an entire row of stretchers and the next layer entirely of headers. [[Category:Building Terms]] [[Category:Cladding]]
