Heat Pumps: The Real Cost
"The best performing systems show that well-designed and installed heat pumps can operate well in the UK.

Heat Pumps
If you live in a moderate climate where the temperature during the cold months doesn't fall lower than 30ºF, you may want to install a heat pump.

Heat Pumps
One of the latest developments in the heating and cooling of homes is the heat pump. This electric powered dual system extracts BTUs (heat) from the outside air (or water) and transfers it to the inside of the home in cool weather.

Heat pumps use the same technology as your refrigerator. Through coils and compressors, they take two spaces in relative equilibrium and move heat from one place to another, making one space warmer and the other space cooler.

Q. I've been thinking about buying a heat pump to replace my aging forced-air oil furnace. How do they work, and are they really as efficient as advertised?

Do Heat Pumps Save You Money?
The cost to install and run different kinds of heat pumps varies quite a bit.

Central Heat Pumps
Central heating pumps work by exchanging the heat from a cooler area to a hotter area. Therefore, it is one source of heating that can help in lowering polluting emissions. Heat pumps are also used for cooling areas.

Some heat pumps are packaged systems. These usually have both coils and the fan outdoors. Heated or cooled air is delivered to the interior from ductwork that protrudes through a wall or roof.

A heat pump is usually an electrically-powered system that can either heat or cool by transferring heat from one place to another. During the heating season, a heat pump extracts heat from ...

Heat Pumps and Gas Heaters
Though different types of heaters are available, most commonly used are natural gas heaters and electric-air -source heat pumps. Natural gas heaters are popular where natural gas is easily available.

Heat pumps should also be serviced annually, at either the beginning or end of the heating or cooling season. The exterior compressor/condenser units should be kept clean and free of all leaves and debris.

Heat pumps are air conditioners that contain a valve that allows switching between air conditioner and heater.

Geothermal heat pumps are an energy efficient way to heat your home. Geothermal heating uses the natural occurring heat below the surface of the earth to heat the home.

Geothermal heat pumps use water from wells, making them much more efficient for both heating and cooling than standard air source heat pumps. Watch this video to find out how they can reduce the energy costs in your home.

Because heat pumps do not actually create heat"they just move it from one place to another"heat pumps are more efficient than other forms of heating.
COP Coefficient of Performance, COP, is the ratio of energy input to heating capacity.

Refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioning units and water heaters all have high-efficiency models.

Heat pumps and air conditioners are generally sized in tons. Typical sizes for single family residences are between two and five tons.

"I'm tired of hearing 'experts' say people should add solar panels or ground-source heat pumps to homes that already use twice the energy they should to heat and cool," says Andrew Padian, ...

Heat pumps, furnaces and boilers must be tuned up at regular intervals to keep them at peak performance levels.
Air conditioners must not be placed in locations of direct sunlight. This will increase their workload.

The second thing to know is that, while "heat pumps" are generally very efficient, refrigerators are not shining examples of that fact. Can the situation be remedied?

While this equipment may sound exotic, its operation is fairly easy to understand when compared to that of conventional air-to-air heat pumps.

Heat pumps extract heat from either the air or ground and transfer that heat by circulating a refrigerant through a cycle of alternating evaporation and condensation. The cycle can be reversed for cooling.

With geothermal systems (also called ground-source heat pumps), you capture heat and cold from the ground beneath the frost line (where temperatures are pretty constant year-around, about 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit).

This is a measure of the cooling performance for rating central air-conditioners and central heat pumps. The appliance standards require a minimum SEER of 10 for split-system central air-conditioners and for split-system central heat pumps.

Ground source heat pumps transfer heat from the ground into a building to provide space heating or to pre-heat domestic hot water.

SEER: Universal energy rating for heat pumps.
Service Entrance Panel: Main power cabinet where electricity enters the home wiring system.
Service Equipment: The main control gear at the service entrance, such as circuit breakers, fuses, and switches.

Since many furnaces and heat pumps are upflow designs (located in a basement), it is difficult to get the dense cooled air up to the second floor rooms anyway. The last thing you need is leaky duct joints.

For room air conditioners, central air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces and boilers, the range is not energy consumption, but rather, the energy efficiency ratings for these products (EER, SEER, HSPF & SEER, and AFUE , respectively).

This process does not require gas, oil, or wood to run, and the only upsetting aspect to the environment is digging underground to insert the piping. Further still, geothermal heat pumps require very little maintenance, if any at all.
