I-beams
Sometimes you need to make a flat, level surface, such as a floor, very stiff and strong. One way is to make "I-beams." They got this name because the cross section of a steel I-beam looks like a printed capital I.

I-beam- A steel beam with a cross section resembling the letter I. It is used for long spans as basement beams or over wide wall openings, such as a double garage door, when wall and roof loads bear down on the opening.

I-beam (poutre I) A steel beam with a cross section at the top and bottom resembling the capital letter I.
ice capping See plumbing terms.
ice lensing See frost heaving.

I-beam: A type of load bearing beam made of metal or composite wood whose cross section is shaped like the letter I. Used for wide open spans.

I-beam — A steel beam with a cross section resembling the letter I.

I-Beam: A steel beam that resembles the letter I in cross section.
Ice Dam: Condition formed at the lower roof edge by the thawing and re-freezing of melted snow on the overhang. Can force water up and under shingles, causing leaks.

I-BEAM: steel whose cross section resembles the letter I.

ICE DAM: ridge of ice at roof eaves or gutters causing snow and ice blockage, and preventing from properly draining.

I-beam
A structural steel beam whose cross-section is in the shape of an I. ie a vertical segment capped top and bottom by two shorter horizontal segments.
Igneous rock
Rock derived from lava or magma.

After major foundation work on my 50 year old vacation home, 8 I-beams (925 sq. ft) and minimal cracking (raised 1") I had a new roof installed along with straightening and cross-ties to correct the sagging roof line.

Sometimes referred to as I-beams, are structural, load-carrying products. I-joists are typically available in long lengths and because they are very lightweight can be easily handled at the jobsite without the need for costly handling equipment.

In the attic, Rob combined the 2 x 6 floor joists with deeper wooden I-beam joists and filled the spaces in between with 68 bales of cellulose insulation.

Structurally, a SIP can be compared to an I-beam: The foam core acts as the web, while the facings are analogous to the I-beam's flanges.

Running the length underneath each home (except those going on basements or perimeter foundations) are steel I-beams. Singlewides have two I-beams, doublewides found and triplewides six.

To do that, a crew from Northeast Building Movers spent a few days positioning massive steel I-beams under the barn. Eight hydraulic jacks under those I-beams can gently lift the barn 28 inches, giving Tom plenty of room to install the new floor.

Most bar clamps don't develop as much clamping pressure as pipe clamps or I-beam clamps (several hundred pounds of force would be typical), but they are lighter and less expensive. They come in lengths from 6 in. to 36 in.

Once the frame of an aluminum sunshade is constructed, it is often placed on I-beams for additional strength.

Removing the top and bottom flange of the end(s) of a metal I-beam. This is done to permit it to fit within, and bolted to, the web of another I-beam in a "T" arrangement
Coped joint
Cutting and fitting woodwork to an irregular surface.

Web: The middle plate of an I-beam, H-beam or channel. The web connects the two flanges, and resists shear forces.
Weep holes: Small holes in storm window frames that allow moisture to escape.

Joists are usually made of engineered wood I-beams or 2 x 8 or larger lumber.
Foundation footing-The base on which the foundation walls rests.

The main structure of the building is supported by steel columns and steel I-beams. By raising the house above the earth, Murcutt protected the dry soil and surrounding trees.

Floor Joists
The main subfloor framing members that support the floor span. Joist are usually made of engineered wood I-beams or 2x8 (or larger) lumber.
Fly Rafters
The end rafters that form the outside edge of the roof's rake (overhang).

These include plywood, MDF, OSB, particle board, glulam, LSL, LVL, PSL and structural I-beams. Engineered wood is used instead of dimensioned lumber. Often made with rye straw, wheat straw or sugar cane rind, instead of wood.
