The king stud (10' long) and trimmer (80" long, the rough opening height) were laid out and nailed together.

Jack/king stud-The framing stud, sometimes called the trimmer, that supports the header above a window, door, or other opening within a bearing wall.

Remove the existing wall studs to clear space (leaving the exterior sheathing intact) for the king studs,headers, sills (on windows) and trimmer studs needed to frame the new rough opening. Dimensions for the new unit are supplied by the manufacturer.

This gives me plenty of room to nail the trimmers to the king studs and the king studs to the header. If the wall is load-bearing, I refer to the plans for the proper header size. If not, a 2x4 on the flat replaces the header.

Door openings commonly have two king studs and two jack studs. A king stud is one that runs continuously from the top plate to the bottom plate.

6. Select a 2 x 4, measure the distance between the King Studs; Measure, cut, and nail the bottom, cross-plate, as shown above.
