Knee Brace
A small support timber (often decorative) that is framed diagonally between a post and a beam via a mortise and tenon joint. The strength of the frame structure is significantly dependent upon properly fitted knee braces.

KNEE BRACE: A corner brace, fastened at an angle from wall stud to rafter, stiffening a wood or steel frame to prevent angular movement.
KNEE WALL: Low wall in upper story resulting from 1 1/2 story construction.
Knee Brace: A diagonal member (usually at a 45 degree angle) that is attached from a piling to a main structural beam or girder and serves to stiffen the foundation.
Often the façade will include more than one gable end, with triangular knee braces lending interest.
Another one of my jobs was to precisely cut and fit the curved knee braces (45-degree braces at every 90-degree junction) and bolt them in place.
