The knee wall, by itself, can provide some degree of insulation against air infiltration from the outside. However, the knee wall is usually not enough provide all the insulation you need. To accomplish this, the U.S.

 


Knee Wall Insulation and Air Sealing
Knee walls—often found in houses with finished attics—are vertical walls with attic space directly behind them. These walls are notoriously leaky and often uninsulated.

I always called knee walls half walls. I didn't know the official name was knee walls. In one of the houses we lived in, we had a knee wall between the living room and the dining room. It was made of brick and looked very attractive.

Build a knee wall to support a deck around the perimeter of the tub. The tub itself rests on the floor, not the knee wall. Important: Heavy tubs in cast iron may require reinforcement of the floor below it.

The term "knee wall" is derived from the association with the vertical location of a human knee, making the average knee wall railing under 3 feet in height.

Trim the Knee Wall Dividers and Doorway Opening
Use a variety of decorative wooden millwork to trim the wall frame and the exposed edges of the original wall and lift the wall from ordinary to elegant. Miter the corners for a professional look.

I was thinking of a knee wall, full wall with an opening, or a line of storage units down the middle. Any creative ideas would be sincerely appreciated.

Prior to the remodel, knee walls had separated the kitchen area from the family room. Under the auspices of Cabin John, Maryland, architect Robert Wilkoff, these half-walls were replaced by columns, which served to open up the room.

Before installing new drywall, I wanted to improve the energy efficiency of the sloped ceiling. The original insulation was 3½" thick R-11 fiberglass.

However, if laying a floor in an attic, extend the subfloor far enough into the eaves so that it supports the knee walls that may be installed later.

To build up these walls above the porch, something called a knee wall was built and then floor joists spanned across this area where a floor was laid (on the second floor) and a new east wall was built.

For the seat's front, frame a small knee wall out of 2x4s, leaving a void in the center for the book cubby.
Top the platform with ¾-inch plywood, and cap its front edge with a molding strip.

We used the 3/4" oriented strand board to make knee walls on the sides. The walls help close in the storage area and keep objects from falling and getting shoved back out of site.
