A drywall knife makes a good, easy to use paint shield when painting adjoining surfaces with different colored paint. Simply hold the knife firmly against one surface while painting the adjacent surface.

Use a putty knife, as shown in Figure 2, not a scraper to lay the spackling compound. A putty knife has some flex in it and a scraper does not.
Note: A metal putty knife works much better than plastic.

Use a putty knife to apply the material, daubing on enough to fill the damaged area. Wipe away any excess with a rag or damp sponge and allow to dry. Some products may shrink as they dry and require a second application to fill completely.

A Word About Heating Tape ...

I use a utility knife, then I bend the cable casing so it breaks apart at the cut. There will be a nylon string inside the cable that will get in the way so you need to cut it off.

Using the broad knife you "feather" the seam 18 inches to two feet away from the seam to "lose" the ridge over that distance.

How to sharpen a knife

Slide a small putty knife between the washer lid and the cabinet. Push the putty knife against the spring catch while lifting up on the lid. Release both catches and fold the lid back.
