Lap siding is a type of siding for buildings made from long, broad planks which are designed to overlap with each other.

 


lap siding (planche à recouvrement, f.) Boards used to cover the sides of buildings, the lower edge of one board being lapped over the upper edge of the board below.

Lap Siding - Slightly wedge-shaped boards used as horizontal siding in a lapped pattern over the exterior sheathing. Varies in butt thickness from ½ to ¾ inch and in widths up to 12".

Lap Siding: Siding used to finish the exterior surface of a house or other structure. Also called ship lap siding.

Mending Lap Siding
Gently pry up the damaged lap siding and remove the nails. Locate the nearest wall studs outside the piece and saw the damaged section back to the wall studs so the new piece will have nailers.

Shiplap siding
Shiplap siding provides the weatherproof security of a lap, and a decorative bend that looks like quarter-round molding below each seam. Overlaps can absorb movement of the house frame without opening. (Fig. 3)
