Wire lath is a wire mesh that is commonly used with plaster to reinforce areas subject to impact damage (e.g. corners and door frames) or moisture damage (e.g. in bathroom areas that are plastered).

To keep the lath from moving, We clamped a piece of 1x3 lumber to the back side of the wall. This board was rather curved, and we placed the "crown" toward the wall. This held better than a straight board.

Lath: :A thin strip of wood nailed to studs or joists as a carrier for plaster. Early laths were riven (split with a blade); in more modern times they were sawn.

Lath and Plaster: The most common wall finish prior to the introduction of drywall. Thin wood strips (lath) were nailed onto the framing as a base for the sand/lime plaster.
Lattice: A framework of crossed wood or metal strips.

Lath and plaster is an old type of interior finish that's found in most homes built before World War II. The most common type of lath is wood, though metal lath is also found (and is more difficult to remove).

Cut the diamond lath with aviation snips so it will stop 1 in. short of the edges of the form and the blockout when installed. You also should install No. 3 (3/8-in.) rebar or reinforcing track around the sink cutout.

Use a reciprocating or jig saw to cut through the lath along the edges of the plaster, and a pry bar to remove the lath from the studs. Remove any remaining nails, vapor barrier, and insulation.

Cement backer board was developed first to replace the cement mud and metal lath systems installed by real craftsmen. Tile backer board now comes in all different types from cement to specialized gypsum-core products that are faced with fiberglass.

It is made from crushed gypsum sheathed in paper (smooth on the faced side and natural on the backside) and gives the appearance of plaster without the need for lath backer strips and it's easy to install because it's sold in panels.
