Ledger Strip - A strip of lumber nailed along the bottom of the side of a girder on which joists rest.

Ledger (for a Structural Floor)- The wooden perimeter frame lumber member that bolts onto the face of a foundation wall and supports the wood structural floor.

LEDGER FLASHING MISSING-The ledger is a piece of horizontal lumber, usually a 2x8 or 2x10 bolted or nailed to
the exterior of a building. Joists are attached to the ledger and the finished decking or stair landing material is
secured to the joists.

The ledger board should have lag bolts installed every 16″ to 24″, or as determined by the length of the joists. Some of these were 36″ or more aprart.

The ledger board must be securely attached to the house with lag bolts into the framing members. It is also a good idea to include flashing between the ledger board and the structure.

Choosing an exposure
The amount of the shingle surface exposed to the weather is called the exposure. Manufacturers should specify the allowable exposure, since it varies depending on the material.

The ledger supports the panel while we begin attaching it to the wall studs with screws. A piece of string with a weight on the end is lined up with the marks we made earlier, showing the location of the wall studs.

Fixing the ledger beam to the house wall. Decking tips 2.
The ledge beam must be fixed to the house with galvanised dyna bolts if fixing to brick wall or coach screws into the studs for a timber wall.

When fastening ledger/header boards to wood, the ledger should be held securely with bolts through the wall or lag screws. Use aluminum flashing to keep water from getting behind your ledger board.

Step1 - Install ledger board on house as shown. Remove siding material if necessary to place your ledger board directly on the sheathing. If siding material is masonry you will bolt the ledger board directly on the surface of the brick or block.

Joist hangers and ledger boards will connect your deck to you home. This is the best solution. The free standing deck will not cause leaks at the house and will not collapse due to rot. Connecting the deck to columns or posts correctly is critical.

Be sure to give the ledger some stability by nailing into wall studs and not just the sheathing. The lookout is a 2x4 cut to the measurement from the end of the truss to the ledger, then nailed to the truss and to the ledger.

Balloon Frame In construction, a type of framing in which the studs extend from the sill to the roof, the second floor is supported by a horizontal ribbon or ledger board and joists that are nailed to studs.

Install the ledger. The ledger is the joist that connects the deck to your house. The ledger should be level and the top should sit 1" below the bottom of the door plus the thickness of your decking material.

Another type of batten door consists of vertical boards nailed at right angles to several (two to four) cross strips called ledgers, with diagonal bracing members nailed between the ledgers.

The most common method of deck attachment is to attach the stringer joist or ledger board to the structural components of the residence with through bolts and large washers or lag bolts.

Now that you have a stable base, place a 1" pipe or ledger board the length of the walkway on either side of the walkway. Then using a flatedge, e.g. a 2"x4" board, slide it over the two lengths of the pipe/ledger board.
