The lumen (symbol: lm) is the SI derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total "amount" of visible light emitted by a source.
Lumens- Unit of measure for total light output. The amount of light falling on a surface of one square foot.
Lumens are the standard measure of light produced by a bulb. Standard 100-watt bulbs produce about 1600 lumens.
Lumens

For example, a typical 25-watt light bulb produces only 210 lumens of light. A 100-watt light bulb produces 1600 lumens of light.
Depending on your local electric rates, replacing a standard incandescent bulb with a compact-fluorescent lamp having the same lumens of brightness will save $30 to $40 per bulb in electricity during its estimated 10,000 hour lifetime.
