Metal Flue - A metal channel through which hot air, gas, steam or smoke may pass.
Metal Insulation Support - 16" or 24" wire rod or crisscrossed wire to hold floor insulation in place.

 


Metal flues for gas appliances such as furnaces must have a cap on them to prevent weather and animals from entering. Caps on masonry chimneys are cement/mortar and have a tendency to crack.

Most homes will have a terra cotta tile flue or a metal flue.
Collar beam/tie-A horizontal piece of framing lumber that provides intermediate support for opposite rafters.

But leave a 3" space between metal flues, chimneys and recessed lighting fixtures unless fixture is marked "I.C." (Insulated Ceiling). Don't insulate all the way along the ceiling joists to the soffit.

If you have a brick or clay tile flue (not a metal flue), an occasional handful of salt tossed on the fire will help remove the soot.
When the soot deposit gets too thick, have the flue professionally cleaned.
