A mortise lock will normally specify the thickness of door it is designed to fit, problems will only normally arise if an attempt is made to fit a lock to a too thin a door.

I used mortise and tenons to connect the legs and stretchers. If you aren't good with mortise and tenons, use an overlap joint. The cutting demensions are long enough to allow making an overlap joint.

If an electrician or a plumber cuts notches or drills holes in a roof structure, this may also weaken the tresses. Older roofs can be susceptible to joint failure if they were connected with Mortise and Tenon joints and wooden pegs.

Look for sturdy joinery: dovetail or mortise and tenon joints, dowels and pegs, and stainless steel screws. Brass screws should come with an antirust coating. Never buy furniture that's glued or stapled.
