The newel post came with a notch, which makes it easy to attach to 2x dimension lumber (such as a deck joist).
We laid out the same notch size and shape, but 6 inches further upstream. We cut one edge with a circular saw.

Newel Post The major support for a balustrade system. Newels are larger in diameter than balusters and are located at the bottom and top of a stairway or at a turn in the handrail.

NEWELS Posts placed at top and bottom of flights of stairs to secure handrails, strings.
NOGGING A horizontal piece of timber fixed between studs in a framed wall.

Set the Newel and Handrail Assembly
Now you are ready to set the assembly into place. Set the base of the newel over the pre-drilled holes.

Newel finials sit on the tops of the newels or posts of a staircase. A newel finial may be just a plain geometric shape or it could be intricately carved to look like an acorn, flower or other design.

Newel Post: supports a handrail at the bottom or top of a staircase. Newel posts are used on balcony areas also when a rise of handrail changes.

Over the Post: handrail runs over newel posts with use of handrail fittings.

The newel post has to be completely solid. That's why it is often lag-bolted to the floor joists. The railings attach to the staircase and the newel post.

The newel post and balusters get all the attention, while the exposed side of most staircases is largely ignored. But with the addition of decorative stair brackets, a bland stringer can become an elegant eye-catcher.

Newel post-The post at the top and bottom of the handrails and anywhere along the stair run that creates a directional change in the handrails is called the newel post.

An inexpensive lamp converter kit from a home supply store can turn anything from wood newel posts to plastic piggy banks into unique bedside lamps. For the lamp base, choose items 12 inches high or taller to ensure proper lighting.
