The newel post came with a notch, which makes it easy to attach to 2x dimension lumber (such as a deck joist).
We laid out the same notch size and shape, but 6 inches further upstream. We cut one edge with a circular saw.

Newel Post The major support for a balustrade system. Newels are larger in diameter than balusters and are located at the bottom and top of a stairway or at a turn in the handrail.

The newel post has to be completely solid. That's why it is often lag-bolted to the floor joists. The railings attach to the staircase and the newel post.

The newel post and balusters get all the attention, while the exposed side of most staircases is largely ignored. But with the addition of decorative stair brackets, a bland stringer can become an elegant eye-catcher.

Position the newel post and trace a cutline around the post on the stair tread. Drill the four corners of the cutline to make starter holes, insert the blade of a jigsaw into the first hole and excise the shape.
