A Problem:
This outlet had three wires that combined into one wire... and the connection was wrapped in electrical tape.

Ceiling Outlets
When wiring or rewiring your workshop, consider installing extra outlets in the ceiling, positioned over groupings of power tools. Ceiling outlets can be more accessible and can help eliminate tripping over extension cords.

Outlets with poor internal contacts or loose wire terminals may become overheated and emit sparks. Even a receptacle with nothing plugged into it may run hot if it is passing current through to other outlets on the same circuit.

"Outlet" is defined as: A point on the wiring system at which current is
taken to supply utilization equipment.
This will include more than a receptacle. A light fixture, a smoke alarm are examples of other "outlets" in a wiring system.

An outlet should be wired such that the HOT lead is connected to a specific side of the outlet, and the neutral lead to the other. This is done for safety reasons.

GFCI outlets are mandated by law in many regions of the world in locations like bathrooms, garages, kitchens, crawl spaces, unfinished basements, and outdoor outlets.

These outlets are uncommon in more modern homes, but in older homes they are usually in the majority. These outlets have no grounding hole and will accept only a two-prong plug. The outlet boxes will not have a grounding wire (green or bare wire).

A GFCI outlet does NOT protect against circuit overloads, short circuits, or shocks. For example, you can still be shocked if you touch bare wires while standing on a non-Conducting surface, such as a wood floor.

Switches, outlets and fixtures are the gateways through which your electrical juice pours. Of course, you probably already have a pretty firm grip on what electrical switches and outlets do, but you may not realize what they can do for your home.
