I'm often asked why some brands of pre-fabricated cabinets are so expensive when they are made of particle board.

 


Particle Board

The less expensive ‘woodfurniture is often made of particle board, which is basically sawdust and resin compressed into sheets and veneered or stained.

Particle board- Plywood substitute made of course sawdust that is mixed with resin and pressed into sheets. Used for closet shelving, floor underlayment, stair treads, etc.

Particle board
A panel product made from sawdust or wood particles, bonded with a resin under high heat and pressure.

A free-standing fixture with a wide top and narrow base that conceals the plumbing.

Particle Board
A type of high-density engineered wood that is made of wood particles that are larger than those used for MDF. It is inexpensive, but also subject to splitting, sagging and discoloration over time and swells when exposed to moisture.

Particle board: A composition board made of wood chips or particles bonded together with an adhesive under high pressure.
Partition: A wall that subdivides spaces within any story of a building.

I have a cheap particle board bed room set. I'm in college and can't afford new furniture. I wanted to know if particle board can be refinished? If so, how do I do it?

Particle Board
An engineered wood made of particles (wood chips, shavings and saw dust), glued and pressed tightly together so it is dense, heavy and flat. It is cheaper, weaker and less durable than wood or plywood and harder on your saw blades.

Place a large piece of particle board on a flat surface. Mark off a 56-by-77-inch area with a pencil. You'll probably need two sheets of particleboard to get the proper dimensions.
Cut the boards to size with an electric saw.

Choose solid wood rather than particle board when purchasing furniture - particle board chips are bound together using VOC off-gassing chemicals.

Some substrates are not suitable for hardwood; such as concrete or particle board. On the other hand, laminate hardwood flooring "floats" on the substrate.

Getting dressed is elevated to a new level of indulgence - no need to breathe in toxic chemicals off-gassing from glued veneers or particle boards commonly used by other manufactures.

Some use vertical supports with slots in them that accept metal clips that support particle board, plywood, metal, or full-grain wooden shelves. The shelves provide stability to the unit, preventing swaying and twisting.

The particle board or plywood base often swells and deteriorates in wet areas.

Composite window frames consist of composite wood products, such as particle board and laminated strand lumber.

Special carpet-stair-treads are available at any hardware store. They are usually a strong type of particle board, only rounded on the front side called a bull nose.

Using laminated particle (sawdust and glue) and MDF compressed board is still a cheaper alternative to wood, especially green species; however, particle board and MDF sag and crumble over time, as well as emit harmful gases into your home.

Instead, try sinking particle board into the ground as a cutoff wall, and piling up and compacting earth around it. Wood will degrade in the long term, but in the short term it should provide a protective boost to a temporary barrier.

Furniture can be made of multiple materials, timber being the most common, metals, stone, plastics and particle boards are also popular. Upholstery is used on chairs and sofas to make furniture frames more comfortable.
