Pilaster
A pilaster is a decorative vertical architectural element, similar in look to half a column, projecting slightly out from the wall around a mantle or door frame.

 


Pilasters are thin columns that appear to be built into the wall of Greek-style homes. These columns can be very plain or extremely ornate.

Pilaster Pilasters are two-dimensional (flat) ornaments which represent columns. They occur very commonly in 18th- and 19th-century door surrounds.

There are usually columns or flattened pilasters flanking it. In some cases, the pediment is narrow and other cases, extends out to create a mini-covered entranceway.
