Old rail and stile doors, also called raised panel doors, have a tendency to come apart. I believe most of these doors were glued together during manufacturing, so it's no surprise that the glue might fail after a century or so.
A chair rail
As with ceiling and base trim, lay out the chair rail with the outside corners mitered and the inside corners butted and coped (Fig. 1).
A chair rail is an elegant way to add a finished look and a warm feel to any room.

The Post and Rail Fence
A very similar fence is the post and rail fence. Perhaps the simplest fence one can choose; posts are joined by one, two, or three horizontal rails.
