Pressure Relief Valve
A device mounted on a hot water heater or boiler which is designed to release any high steam pressure in the tank and thus prevent tank explosions.
Replacing a T&P relief valve
Here's how to proceed:
1) Buy a replacement valve
Buy a new T & P relief valve from a plumbing-supply store or home center.
The name is Temperature Pressure Relief Valve (TPR valve). This safety valve releases water (and thus relieves pressure) if either the temperature or pressure in the tank gets too high. These valves are very important.

A vital part of your water heater installation is a temperature and pressure relief valve and relief line. The relief system lets off excess heat and pressure automatically (see image).
All steam boilers require a pressure relief valve and a low-water cut off. Most steam systems have a manual feed valve to allow for the periodic addition of water to the system. A 'sight' gauge on the side of the boiler indicates the water level.
He should also purchase a new relief valve, as they should be replaced every time you put in a new heater. The new relief valve should be piped with 3/4" piping to a point 6" above the finished floor.
As heated water expands, an air-tight "expansion tank" on the hot side of the boiler takes in the excess; and if the tank fills up, a "safety-relief valve" on top of the boiler relieves the pressure.

pressure relief valve by routed to an approved drain or safely to the exterior. This will help limit damage in the
event of a release of the relief valve.
If there is not enough air in the expansion tank, the buildup of pressure will force water out of the safety relief valve located above the boiler. Without enough air in the tank, the tank fills with water.
2. Drain water. Use a garden hose. Lift the lever up on the pressure relief valve to allow air into the tank to help it drain. If the lever on the pressure relief valve is stuck, then cut a waterline at the TOP of the water heater.

I'm having trouble with a well pump. It turns on and runs out of water. The pump can be turned off for a time and turned back on then will work for a while. Is there a relief valve in the system or is the pump burning out?
