Roll roofing and built-up roofing are the most common techniques used to cover flat roofs.

 


Roll Roofing - Roofing material, composed of fiber and satin rated with asphalt, that is supplied in 36-inch wide rolls with 108 square feet of material. Weights are generally 45 to 90 pounds per roll.

Roll roofing: Asphalt roofing products manufactured in roll form.
Round front bowl: Toilet bowl having dimensions of 14" wide by 16 1/2" long (from center of seat hinge holes to front outside rim edge).

ROLL ROOFING PAPER - Roofing material (felt) made with asphalt fibers. Heaviest weight is 10-lb. and roll is 36" wide.
ROOF - The covering on top of a building.

Roll Roofing: the term applied to smooth surfaced or mineral surfaced coated felts.

ROLL ROOFING: Roofing material of fiber and asphalt manufactured in rolls.
ROUGH FLOOR: The subfloor on which the finished floor is laid.
ROUGH HARDWARE: All the concealed fasteners in a building, such as nails, bolts, and hangers.

Roll Roofing/Rolled Roofing: Asphalt roofing products manufactured in roll form.
Roof: The top of the house. Used broadly to include the roofing, flashing, sheeting, substructure, gutters and roof attachments.

Roll roofing, however, is commonly used on low-sloped roofs, especially in the inner city, and functions reasonably well. Rolled mineral roofing material comes in 36-inch wide x 50 feet long rolls and is installed with a 2 to 4-inch lap.

Roof Flashing ...

Concealed Nail Method Application of roll roofing in which all nails are driven into the underlying course of roofing and covered by a cemented, overlapping course. Nails are not exposed to the weather.

You probably have guessed that the roll roofing floor is going to get painted. Before we talk about that, let's examine an advantage of this method. Often, when a building is going up, a new floor is exposed to the weather for many days, maybe weeks.

A molding with a concave face used as trim or to finish interior corners.

Mineral-Surfaced Roofing: Asphalt shingles and roll roofing that are covered with granules.

Smooth-Surfaced Roofing: Roll roofing that is covered with ground talc or mica instead of granules.
Soffit: The underside of an overhanging cornice of a building extending out from the plane of the building walls.

If your dog likes to play Snoopy and sit on top of his house, don't use real roll roofing, shingles or metal. These roofing materials absorb the heat of the sun and can get hot enough to become dangerous [source: Lowe's].

Selvage - The unsurfaced strip along a sheet of roll roofing which forms the under portion at the lap in the application of the roof covering.
Semi Detached - A property which is attached to another one on one side only.

Ninety-Pound (#90) - a prepared organic felt roll roofing with a granule surfaced exposure that has a mass of approximately 90 pounds per 100 square feet.

Soil Cover (or Ground Cover)
A light covering of plastic film, roll roofing, or similar material used over the soil in crawl spaces of buildings to minimize moisture permeation of the area.

Valleys should be covered with a mineral-surfaced, roll roofing material (see image).
First, place an 18"-wide strip or metal flashing down the center of the valley, from the eaves to the top of the ridge.

Back-Surfacing: A fine mineral material on the back side of roofing materials such as roll roofing to keep them from sticking together while packaged.

Selvage - An edge or edging that differs from the main part of (1) a fabric, or (2) granule-surfaced roll roofing material.

If you plan on continuing your shingles on to your patio then you should { if possible} make it at least a 2-12 pitch as above but 4-12 is best. if you'll be putting roll roofing on then no more than a 2-12 pitch

You can cover a flat roof with tar and gravel, modified bitumen roofing, EPDM rubber roofing, asphalt roll roofing, metal, or PVC membrane. Other factors that will affect your decision include location, climate, style, level of maintenance, and cost.
