After thoroughly dampening the masonry or wood lath, the first, scratch coat should be applied to the masonry substrate, or wood or metal lath, in a thickness that corresponds to the original if extant, or generally about 1/4" to 3/8".

Most real stone is too heavy to be supported by the bond of the mortar to the plaster scratch coat. If you have a foundation of concrete or block you could use quick bolts and fasten an angle iron to the wall and lay your stone on that.

If the cabinet finish is dingy overall and has lots of scratches, consider a wipe-on product like Old English Scratch Coat. These products can darken the finish slightly, so you have to apply them to all your cabinets.
