Apply a sealer.
It is important that the finishing coats of paint be protected with a water based sealer. I recommend that at minimum three coats of sealer should be used on kitchen countertops and a minimum of two on bathroom countertops.
When the sealer is dry, lightly rub the surface with the steel wool and then dust with the tack cloth,.
Paint your piece in thin, even coats. If you're using more than one coat, be sure to let it dry completely between coats.
If it is a sealer/clear coat or paint, mythelyne chloride is the fastest way, but somewhat dangerous. Some paints are a masonry base and muratic acid will work best.
