Sometimes my house starts smelling like sewage. After I flush the bedroom toilet and run water down the sink, it seems to start to dissipate. What is the problem? (BTW that bathroom is almost never used).
Sewage sludge is a thick sludge of solid materials which settle out from wastewater during the treatment process, whether the wastewater is being moved through a home septic system or a commercial sewage treatment plant.
Sewage is wastewater that can be hazardous to the environment, which is why we don't want raw sewage to get into the groundwater or other bodies of water.

I use the term disposal-sewage-system because most homes now have garbage disposals that empty into the sewage system. Sink disposals contribute a lot to the septic system.

Water and sewage treatment cost money. When you reduce water consumption, you can save on both counts. If you have an older water-guzzling toilet and it starts to need repairs, give serious thought to replacing it entirely.
