Shaker wardrobes may have no drawers, but just a top shelf and space for hanging clothing. Other models of Shaker bedroom furniture wardrobes have one or two drawers at the bottom of the unit.
Shakes often are split by hand rather than cut and have a very irregular surface. They are thicker and therefore more durable than shingles, which typically last no more than 20 to 25 years.
After a shake is painted, you insert the thin end into the groove. The shake sticks up in the air and can dry rapidly. You can place many shakes in a single piece of plywood.
Attaching cedar shakes is a very long manual process! Note that there are different types of cedar shingles requiring a varying degree of preparation from absolutely NONE to extensive.
