What Is A Short Circuit?
A short circuit is a break in the normal path of an electrical current and results when a hot current comes into contact with either a neutral or ground current.

Short circuit- A situation that occurs when hot and neutral wires come in contact with each other. Fuses and circuit breakers protect against fire that could result from a short.

SHORT CIRCUIT: The condition that exists when a hot wire comes in contact with a neutral or grounded wire or conductor within a circuit. It should cause the fuse to blow or the circuit breaker to trip.

Short Circuit?
Every time I try to turn the washer on, the circuit breaker to the electrical outlet switches off. When I plug other appliances into the same outlet, there is no problem. Has the washer short-circuited and what should I do?

A short circuit caused by overheated wiring can not only cause an outlet to spark - it can also create the ignition source for a dangerous electrical fire.

Ground-fault Any short circuit finding at least some of its path to the earth by way of something other than the neutral wire. It is a "leaking" of current off of the intended path. Most shocks are an example. Hot Or "live.

Though a GFI will activate if a grounded appliance develops an electrical short circuit to ground... such as when YOU touch a metal saw and become the path to ground... you will experience a momentary electrical shock.

This will help prevent your touching the metal while working and also help prevent short circuits from tools.

If the fuse window is blackened, the cause is a short circuit - meaning that somewhere wires are touching each other or a wire is making contact with metal.

When a fuse is blown by a short circuit, the metal strip is instantly heated to an extremely high temperature, and this heat causes it to vaporize.

This is typical evidence of a short circuit sometime in the past. Somebody probably stuck a metal object into the side of the junction box when the cover plate was removed. Simply wrapping the outlet in electrical tape can prevent this.

A GFCI outlet does NOT protect against circuit overloads, short circuits, or shocks. For example, you can still be shocked if you touch bare wires while standing on a non-Conducting surface, such as a wood floor.

The amperage ratings of the breakers is a different kind of thing that works on current or Electric flow. They trip if there is over-current in the case of a short circuit.
