Smoke detectors are the single most important step you can take to protect yourself and your family from fatal house fires.

Smoke detectors are now required by law!
By now, everyone should have at least one smoke detector somewhere in the home; and most folks have at least one on every level, including the basement.
But did you know....?

Smoke Detector Placement.
Most people will have one smoke detector per floor, however this is not the best detection method. If a door is closed to a room in which a fire starts it will be out of control before the smoke reaches the detector.

Smoke detectors have never been the most elegant looking devices. Many of them stick out from the wall and have grids that just collect dust over time and require cleaning. However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't install a detector.

Smoke detectors are an essential safety tool to have around in case of a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a 2008 survey concluded that 41 percent of home fires occurred in homes without working smoke alarms [source: NFPA].

Carbon monoxide testers can be hardwired or self-contained like smoke detectors. Similarly, some carbon monoxide detectors can sound an alarm when the gas is present.

The fire survival rate in homes with working smoke detectors is 99.41 percent, according to the NFPA. Toss in a sprinkler, and the rate rises to 99.6 percent. "Consider how little it costs to install smoke alarms," Orlowski says.

Check your smoke detectors regularly (and make sure you have enough; they are cheap enough to have one on each floor and one in each bedroom).

Both detector types are effective smoke sensors and both must pass the same test to be certified as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) smoke detectors.
