Spalling concrete is concrete which has broken up, flaked, or become pitted. This is usually the result of a combination of poor installation and environmental factors which stress the concrete, causing it to become damaged.
Spalling: The chipping or flaking of concrete, bricks, or other masonry where improper drainage or venting and freeze/thaw cycling exists.
SPALLING - Hard outer surface of brick separates and falls off exposing brick's soft interior. This occurs when water freezes and expands after it has penetrated a porous or cracked brick wall, forcing the brick' surface to pull away.
spalling (écaillage, effritement, m.) The breaking off of the surface layer of concrete or brick work, usually caused by frost action.
Spalling: Condition of concrete when small pieces are breaking off due to wear, use of salt, or other reasons. Span: The distance between structural supports such as walls, columns, piers, beams, girders, and trusses.
Spalling " The cracking and breaking away of the surface of a material. Span " The clear distance that a framing member carries a load without support (between structural supports).
Spalling: Cracking or flaking that develops on a concrete surface. Span: The distance between structural supports such as walls, columns, piers, beams, girders, and trusses.
Spalling brick. Spalling occurs when moisture gets into the brick and freezes. This causes the surface of the brick to fall off. The porosity and quality of the brick, and the climate have a significant impact on spalling.
Spalling - The separation of a surface layer caused by thermal or mechanical stresses (as in cooling, bending, etc.).
Spalling - the act of concrete splitting or breaking up in layers, usually due to water penetration. Square - Unit of measure. One square is 100 square feet, equivalent to 10'X10' area.
Bricks spalling The bricks on the outside of our house are spalling, the face of the bricks crack and fall off. This happens more and more particularly after the winter season. Only the bricks from about 2-3 feet up from the ground are involved.
“Spalling' is the mason's term for concrete that's pitted or chipped, as in Photo 1. The key to a lasting repair is to make a saw cut around the perimeter of the damaged area, cutting back to solid concrete.
"Usually [spalling and efflorescence are] caused by a moisture problem from a faulty roof or faulty chimney," says Harry Brax of Brick Transformers in the Chicago area.
Cracks and spalling from under-strength concrete. Insufficient design strength. Cracks and spalling from under-designed concrete.
"When you have spalling patches of flaky stone on the outside wall, it may not be too serious," Douglas says. "If there is plenty of material left and the damage is only superficial, it may be best to do nothing.
frame and precast concrete tee that had special temperature isolation points at the connection points to prevent the temperature absorbed by the steel inner liner surface from being transferred to the concrete that would be susceptible to spalling.

These may include dense stone or brick, previously painted or stuccoed masonry, or spalling brick substrates. A good mechanical bond is always preferable to reliance on bonding agents.
It looks like slate, but it's porcelain tile. Jade Chestnut's edges are smooth and its surface is flat, eliminating the problems of bumpiness and even spalling found in authentic slate tile. Materials for this Bathroom Tile Design Jade Chestnut ...
But an increasing number of driveways are showing their age: cracks, heaving, spalling and other signs of distress. Many of these surfaces can be renewed with the procedures described in "Renewing Your Driveway." Others will have to be replaced.
The water/cement ratio should be as low as possible to improve durability of the surface. Too much water in the mix will produce a weaker, less durable concrete that will contribute to early flaking and spalling of the surface.
As the result of poor manufacturer (more common with old brick than modern post War brick) or Due to water trapped behind the front face of bricks expanding during freezing conditions causing the face to flake off (known as 'spalling').
