Building a set of stairs require some knowledge of math and a few hand tools. Since the majority of stairs use 2" x 10" x 1-1/2" thickness lumber, this project will do likewise.

Once you have the stairs in the attic, you need to screw two pieces of lumber to the underside of the ceiling at either end of the opening. Any piece of waste lumber will do, you could use the old trim you removed earlier.

Building deck stairs from scratch can be a technical, time-consuming process. A stringer can be made using 2X12 redwood or pressure treated boards, notched to accommodate the step treads.

Folding attic stairs can be one of the biggest culprits for air infiltration of your home. To fix the problem install foam weather stripping around the perimeter of the attic stair opening or construct an insulating stair cover.

BUILDING YOUR STAIRS
To build the staircase, first notch the stringers for the treads and risers. Fasten two stair gauges to a carpenter's square at the dimensions of the rise and run (for example, at 6-1/2" on one leg and 13" on the other).

If your basement stairs are steep, attach a card to the railing that cautions buyers to watch their step.
