Starter strip: Asphalt roofing applied at the eaves that provides protection by filling in the spaces under the cutouts and joints of the first course of shingles.

 


We used pre-cut starter strips, which I had never used before. In the past I have always just trimmed the tabs off a whole shingle. These pre-cut strips save a few bucks when the shingles being installed are higher priced.

Starter Strip
A horizontal strip, fastened to the lowest point of the siding installation. It is used to connect the first course of siding to the structure.

The starter strip and utility trim are installed as in the drawing below. The gable ends will have J-channel to hold the vinyl in place at the ends. You will use J-channel for most parts of the trim when installing-vinyl-siding.

The starter strip should project out over the eaves and the gable end by about 5/8".
After the starter strip is in place, again locate the exact center of the roof and mark it with a chalk line.

Lay a starter strip before the first full course of shingles. The starter strip consists of "tabless" shingles that you can make by cutting the tabs from regular shingles.

4) Install starter strip
Level and nail a starter strip for your first course (Fig. 3). Use the slots provided to fasten the starter and nail only to within 1/32-inch of the vinyl surface.

­When you begin the actual installation process, you will first nail in your starter strip, which looks different from your regular siding piece.

Calculate the height of starter strip so that the siding's shadowlines meet the tops of the most visible windows.

(I know the starter strip and at least one sheet of siding cover the plate I need to fasten to). If I do need to remove the siding in my way, how do I fasten the remaining siding to the wall above the deck, which will stay?

Begin by trimming the perimeter of the roof with drip caps. Install the eave drip caps first, slipping them under the roofing felt. Then add the rake drip caps over the felt. Roll out an asphalt starter strip along the eave so it overhangs about 1/2 ...

This means you have to make a long vertical cut after the paper wraps around the corner and then you overlay the cut piece on the tiny sliver that wrapped around the corner. Be sure to re-plumb this new thin starter strip so all subsequent pieces on ...
