A stud finder is a small device that allows one to identify where wooden or metal beams exist underneath walls. This can assist one in finding good places to use nails or picture hangers.

After the stud framed walls are constructed they are propped up into place and braced. Roof rafters and ceiling joists are typically stick built and installed in place on top of the walls, unless roof trusses are used.

Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs, and mark each with a pencil. Tip: Verify the stud locations you have marked by drilling above or below the pencil lines (depending on the cabinet location).

An exposed stud wall in a garage is a great place to store items. You can attach 1x4s horizontally between the studs for shelves and attach them to a stud with a single screw to create a swinging gate for storing items vertically.
