Deck support posts are an important part of building a deck. Once you have the size of the post you need from decking span tables. The most common post sizes are 90mm x 90mm for low decks.
This corner support post was not positioned the same as the other corner... the base of this post was moved out flush with the face of the deck and secured with a block of wood.

The second 6 x 6 support post hole was dug. The post was placed in the hole and clamped to the third angle truss using the pipe clamps.
Step 8: Make the Support Post
Measure and notch out a support post that will attach to the side of the deck. Level and plumb the notched out post and mark around the base of the anchor.
Survey and layout - relatively simple, since carport construction consists of support posts and a roof. Measure the perimeter and accurately mark support post placement according to plans; if installing a kit, follow kit instructions.
Mark the size of your desired batting cage and the locations of the support posts [source: Gourock]. Your cage will be 12 feet (3.5 meters) wide by as long as you wish.
Made of galvanized steel, it supports the base of the support post and allows some adjustment of the post on the concrete support for final placement.

Intermittent posts or spacer posts can by used between the main support posts. The top railing member can be easily nailed to the side of the main posts at desired height. Posts can then be cut off.
It might be necessary however; to secure the main support posts to the framework before the walls and floors are sealed up. In that case, you can secure the newel post to the floor joists or stringers.
Use 2x3 for front porch frame and support posts. Porch posts will be 4' 6" long as shown. Install roof frame to playhouse. Cut and nail plywood roof sheathing to top. Install double layer of 30 pound roof felt or shingles.
Column: A load bearing support post made of wood, steel or masonry.
If you don't have plans, the engineer might be able to give you some useful information anyway based on photos of the garage exterior and interior, including the roof system, support posts, and any other visible structural elements.

Other interior concerns ...
These jack posts are harder to use to raise floors and have more value as permanent support posts, Figure 5) for a floor that needs additional support. The steel jack posts can be left in place as permanent support.
Instead, the beams will run from the inside of the structure to the outside of the structure. Other front balcony designs use columns, support posts, or plinths for stability.

Manufacturers approach this differently, so it's worth checking. Table dimensions and the distance between the chuck and the support post also help determine how large a workpiece can be positioned beneath the chuck.
Support post-A vertical framing member usually designed to carry or support a beam or girder. In newer construction a metal lally (pronounced "lolly") column is commonly used, as well as 4 x 4- or 6 x 6-inch wood posts.
