However, when water is flowing, it can be routed to the well by a swale or roof downspout. Dry wells are particularly helpful in a spot where downspouts are flooding a large paved area or when you're coping with runoff from a large roof.

Generally, if the house is located on a slope or on a lot that receives water run-off, swales are often used to direct the water around the house. Swales are shallow ditches or depressions in the landscape that capture the water run-off.

If you have a naturally occurring wet spot in your yard, or a low swale or drainageway with heavy clay soils, you easily can turn it into a wetland paradise.

Use rainwater cisterns, vegetated swales and depressions to reduce runoff.
Reduce the amount of impervious site area.
Filter surface runoff.
Use pervious paving materials.

Slope the earth away from the house for at least 5 feet at a minimum 5% grade (3 inches in 5 feet). Establish drainage swales to direct rainwater around the house.
Add a sill gasket to provide air sealing.

The project took six months to complete, working with Dirck K. Bartlett of ILEX Construction. Only one tree was lost in the process. Roof runoff is collected in gravel channels and piped into a swale.
