Tempered glass is one of two kinds of safety glass regularly used in applications in which standard glass could pose a potential danger.

Tempered- Strengthened. Tempered glass will not shatter nor create shards, but will "pelletize" like an automobile window.

Fully Tempered Glass

Fully-tempered or laminated glass is commonly used for safety glazing. Tempered glass limits the risk of injury by fracturing into small fragments.

Other options to considers are high performance glass like tempered which is the Hercules of glass. Not only is it extra strong but if it breaks, it won't shatter into a zillion sharp edges, but rather a zillion pebble-like pieces.
