U-Value. A unit of measure that records the overall heat transfer of a window. Lower values provide better insulation. Look for a value of 0.33 or less.
Visual Transmission (VT).

U-value (coefficient K, m.) The overall amount of heat transmitted through the entire window (centre of glass, edge of glass, frame, and spacer).

U.L.

U-Values represent the amount of heat that escapes through a wall, window, roof or other surface. The lower the U-Value, the more energy efficient a material is. R-Values are the direct opposite. These measure an object's resistance to heat flow.

U-Value: The overall coefficient of heat transfer of an assembly measured in BTUs per square foot, per degrees Fahrenheit difference in temperature per hour.

R- and U-values are based on standards set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers [7].

Windows: Look for the U-Value
You may want to rebuild your home with energy-saving window products. These include all types of windows, doors with windows, and skylights. To find the most energy-efficient window product, look for the U-value.

The insulating quality of a window is measured in terms of its U-Value. A low number for this measurement indicates high insulation and energy absorbtion; therefore, less expense for cooling and heating.

The NFRC rating lists the U-value for the overall window, not just the glass. The lower the U-value, the more energy efficient the window.

The rate of heat loss is indicated in terms of the U-value of a window assembly. U-value ratings generally fall between 0.20 and 1.20. The insulating value is indicated by the R-value which is the inverse of the U-value.

The next basic energy rule we need to review is how heat flow depends only on the temperature difference, the U-value of the insulation separating the inside and outside, and the surface areas.

When shopping for new windows, look for something called a U-value, which is a rating system produced by the National Fenestration Rating Council. The lower the number the better. In cold climates, a U-value of .50 or .

R-Value: The thermal resistance of a glazing system. The R-value is the reciprocal of the U-value. The higher the R value, the less heat is transmitted throughout the glazing material.

Remember, windows are a good thing, but they dont insulate as well as a wall. Green windows will have a low U-value, low-e glazing, and an aluminum or wood frame. Vinyl frames perform well, but the material itself isn't good to the environment.

The benefits of low-e is they reduce the U-Value (conductance of heat) increase the R-Value (resistance to heat flow), making for a more comfortable environment.
