Varnish is a finish which can be applied to wood and other surfaces to create a hard, glossy film which will resist the elements.

Varnished floors are durable and easy to clean. With normal wear and tear, varnish is resistant to moisture and wears well, but it does scratch easily and darken with age.

Varnish, which imparts a clear, transparent coating when applied, is a popular choice for producing a durable, hard finished surface. Available in varying degrees of sheen from flat to very high gloss, varnishes may be water-based or oil-based.

Paint/Varnish

Varnish
A thickened preparation of drying oil or drying oil and resin. When applied to a surface, it leaves a hard, glossy, transparent coating. It may also be mixed with pigments to make enamels.

Spar varnish was developed for the marine industry. The other thing I like about this finish too or this top coat is that it's got a very slight yellow or amber color to it and that's going to look very attractive on top of this cherry stain.

If the varnish is in good shape, lightly buff it with fine sandpaper and prime and paint it.

Paint or varnish can be sanded away with any type of power or hand sander (see image). For bigger sanding jobs, you'll want to use a power sander. Belt, disk or drum sanders can be used.

Examples of common items that can release VOCs include paints, varnishes, and wax, as well as in many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products.

Varnish.Unless you are prepared to spend time every year maintaining it, varnish is not a good choice. If you do, choose a marine varnish, which will hold up the best.

Never apply lacquer or polyurethane/varnish directly over a putty patch; it will leave a permanently soft mess. Shellac will harden; however, the patch will remain somewhat pliable under the finish, so don't attempt this on a heavy-wear surface.

Among the worst culprits are paints, varnishes and finishes, which contain a specific variety of toxin called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which for a long time were believed essential to the performance of the paints themselves.

If the frames are well varnished rub them with spirit of wine, which will take out all spots and give them a fine polish. Varnished doors may be done in the same manner.

VOC's are emitted by things like paints, paint strippers, varnishes, and waxes, cleaning products, hobby products, pesticides, moth repellants, air fresheners, and dry-cleaned or chemically treated fabrics.

Cork floors are similar to wood floors in that they are usually sealed with a varnish. The varnish protects them from dirt and debris that can clog the cork's pores. However, over time, the varnish will wear away and will need to be reapplied.

If you've kept fuel in the engine's system over the winter months, it can varnish the carburetor and cause a hard start -- or prevent the engine from starting at all.

Even if you seal it tight with paint or varnish, it will expand and contract somewhat. But the less you seal it, the more it will move. Some woods move a great deal with changes in humidity, others less so.
