A vent stack is used to filter gasses away from a home or business and is a crucial component in an indoor plumbing system. The vent stack typically runs inside of the walls of a structure and exits out of the roof.
Vent Stack: A vertical vent pipe installed for the purpose of providing circulation of air to and from any part of a drainage system.

The plumbing vent stack had an old metal flashing around it, and it was sealed with gobs of roofing tar. We removed that and scraped off the tar. This is a typical scrap of shingle that was left behind by the shovels and scrapers.
Vent Pipe A small pipe that extends from plumbing fixtures to a vent stack in the roof, allowing sewer gases to escape to the outer air.
This is located on the outside wall of your house and is called the main vent stack. If your house is especially large, you may have two of these.
The first place to start is your vent stack. This is about the most common area of moist air going up from inside the house.
4) Roof around obstructions Adjust courses as you approach a vent stack or other obstruction so you can notch the shingles without cutting into the nailing bar.
At the fixtures (bridges between the two systems), the air admitted by the vent stack and vent pipes keeps the traps sealed and prevents sewer gases from backing up through the drains. See more plumbing pictures.
If part of your basement renovation design includes a bathroom, time and costs can be cut if bathroom fixtures are located near existing plumbing. This means designing the bathroom floor plan close to the main waste-vent stack and house drain.
Vent the sump to the outdoors or to a vent stack with a 4-in.-dia. PVC pipe. A solid, sealed cover should only be installed on sumps equipped with below-floor pipes that drain directly into the well.
Some gas heaters require a vent stack to the outside of the home, these units are commonly called vented logs. Vent-free heaters can be installed anywhere in the home without the need to vent or exhaust gasses to the homes’ exterior.
