The top of the counter for home repairs and building projects must be sturdy; about 1 ½" thick. Height of the workbench is important. You want to comfortably work on projects without stooping.

If you're adding a new pipe to a fitting, ensure a square cut by wedging the pipe firmly against a piece of wood screwed down to your workbench.
