The Akhal-Teke is a descendant of the fierce and much-valued Turkmenian horse. The Turkmene breed was supposedly used by King Darius as a cavalry mount.
The Akhal-Teke horses are named by the Teke tribe of the Akhal oasis. Isolation and a strong sense of tradition kept the bloodlines relatively pure. These horses became a measure of wealth so they were well cared for and considered like family.

The Akhal-Teke is a horse from Turkmen, in the southern region of the modern country of Turkmenistan. These horses have been renowned as cavalry mounts and racehorses for some 3,000 years.
The Akhal-Teke is the most distinctive strain of the ancient race of horses known as Turk oman, or Turkmen, which have played such a successful part in the mounted warfare of the past 2,000-3,000 years.

The Akhal-Teke is a horse from Turkmenistan, in northern Iran adjacent to the former Soviet Union. These horses have been renowned as cavalry mounts and racehorses for some 3,000 years.
Other oriental-type breeds with similar physical characteristics include the Barb of North Africa and the Akhal-Teke of western Asia. The desert environment produced a horse that had to cooperate with humans to survive.
