This breed that was bred in the Altai Mountains is well adapted to its harsh climate. They were bred for a strong heart, lungs, muscles, and tendons along with very hard feet. They are also sure-footed over steep mountain trails.

When used to improve meat and milk yield in native Altai horses, first crosses and backcrosses had better live weight indices and higher growth rate; they better withstood the conditions of year-round grazing.

Most interesting archaeological evidence was unearthed in famous Pazyryk ancient man-made stony hill in Altai (Southern Siberia). The hill was a burial place of a Scythian chieftain.
The Lithuanian Heavy Draft has been crossed with the native Altai horse to improve meat and milk production. These crossbreeds have a higher live weight, higher growth rate and cope more easily with year-round grazing practices.
The Zhemaichu make quality breeding material to medium-sized horses for sport and tourism because of their massive size and clean build. The Zhemaichu stallions are also being used to help develop the new meat-producing breed in the Altai.
