Like other breeds of horses, Minis must adhere to certain standards in order to be considered genuine members of their particular breed.
The American Miniature is a "height" breed; they must measure no more than 34 inches in height at maturity. This measurement is the vertical distance from the last hairs at the base of the mane to the ground.
The American Miniature Horse Association, founded in 1978, lists two classes of miniatures, class A being 34 inches tall or less, and class B ranging from 34 to 38 inches tall.
The American Miniature Horse Registry recognizes two divisions of Miniature Horses. "A" Division Minis are 8.2 hands high (34 inches) and under; and "B" Minis are 8.2 hands high (34 inches) up to and 9.2 hands high (38 inches).
The American Miniature Horse Association's Standard of Perfection calls for a small, sound, well-balanced horse, possessing correct conformation characteristics.

The American Miniature Horse Registry is separated into two divisions, with “A' division miniature horses standing 8.2 hands (34 inches) or under, and division “B' minis standing between 8.2 hands (34 inches) and 9.2 hands (38 inches).
In some registries, such as the American Miniature Horse Association, a miniature horse is also not considered a pony--it is a small horse, under 8.2 hh (86 cm, or 34 in) at the withers. However, there are also miniature pony breeds.
