The American Miniature horse is small, really small. At most, an American Miniature horse can measure 8.5 hands (34 inches, 86.4 centimeters) high at the withers. One centimeter more and it cannot qualify for the American Miniature classification.

The American Miniature Horse Association is the world's leading Miniature Horse registry with over 185,000 horses and more than 11,000 members in 38 countries and provinces.

Popular belief is that American Miniature horses utilized the blood of English and Dutch mine horses brought into this country in the 19th century and used in some Appalachian coal mines as late as 1950.
