These small little equines are extremely tough as well as being quick thinkers and learners who are suitable as a children's riding pony and\or a driving pony.

American Shetland ponies are most often used for breeding and performance, for harness work, and as children's pets. They are present in show jumping competitions for young riders, in horse shows and in halters.

The American Shetland is extremely versatile, ideal for harness work, although excellent children's ponies. They can be seen show jumping, showing Western or English, performing dressage, competing in gymkhana or racing in harness.

American Shetlands are not like the shetland ponies they descended from. The shetland ponies from Scotland were a very wooly breed, while the America shetland pony is more like a miniature horse.

(11.2 hands for American Shetlands) Shetland ponies have heavy coats, short legs and are considered quite intelligent. They are a very strong breed of pony, used for riding, driving, and pack purposes.

These ponies will grow a thick winter coat which will turn into a silky, lighter version in the summer. Their coat can be of any colour but never spotted. American Shetlands have different breed characteristics.

Since then, US and Canadian breeders have produced a new Shetland pony called the American Shetland. It has little resemblance to the original. The Shetland is hardy and able to thrive in the harshest environment. It is sound, robust, and long-lived.

in the USA, this hardy little (9.2 to 10.2 hands) dark-colored, thick-coated pony originating in the Shetland Islands of Scotland is a gentle and easy to train worker, capable of pulling twice its weight in driving harness.
