The Anglo-Arabian horse is just what its name implies: a Thoroughbred (prefix Anglo) crossed with an Arabian horse. The cross can be made between a Thoroughbred stallion and Arabian mare, or vice-versa.

The Anglo-Arab is bred throughout Europe, with France being one of the foremost breeding centers.

The French Anglo-Arab has a straight outline with a very sturdy bone structure as well as flexible legs and joints. Its neck is broad and muscular; the croup is flat and stretched.

In Britain, an Anglo-Arab is a cross between a Thoroughbred stallion and an Arabian mare or vice-versa, with their subsequent re-crossing. These are the only two strains in the pedigree.

The back of the Anglo-Arab horse is usually short, the chest is deep and the shoulders very oblique and powerful. The quarters have a tendency toward being long and horizontal. The frame is well up to weight and is more solid than the Thoroughbred.

The Sardinian , or Sardinian Anglo-Arab, as it is also called, is an old breed that was established in Sardinia during the 15th century.

Later came a chestnut Anglo-Arab called Little John. He was anything but quiet, but taught me a great deal about horse behaviour and training.

Today's Gidran can be crossed with Chestnut, Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian horses with a four-generation pedigree and size of at least 15.2 hands. They are energetic horses that are adept in competition. They also make good saddle horses.

These "Half-Arabians" can be registered in their own registry within the Arabian Horse Association, which includes a special section for Anglo-Arabians, an Arabian-Thoroughbred cross.

This attractive Russian horse originates from the northern Caucasus and was based on Strelets horses, produced by crossing Arabs with quality Orlovs and Anglo-arabs. It is a modern breed, very similar in appearance to the Arab but taller.

The East Bulgarian is a light riding and draft horse, usually chestnut, bay or black. They have originated since 1900 from Thoroughbred and English Halfbred crossed with Anglo-Arab, Arab and Bulgarian Native horses.
