The Appaloosa is the name of a very colorful horse breed which is a full-size one. This horse breed finds its origins in the United States and is an ancient horse breed.

The origin of these horses can be dated back to 1700 when the Spanish explorers offered these horses to Nez Perce, which is a North American Native Indian tribe.

The wonderful Appaloosa horse was the result of selective breeding by the Nez Perce Indians of Idaho, Northeast Oregon, and Southeast Washington. They based the breed on Spanish stock.

The Appaloosa is a compact horse. They were first bred by the Nez Perc'e tribe of Washington State. They have a kindly temperament making them good all-round riding horses.

Fans of Western culture and of the horse in general in North America have probably heard of the Appaloosa.

Although Appaloosas are readily recognized by their spotted coats, some "Appys" are solid in color. The Appaloosa Horse Club recognizes 13 different base colors, including bay, black, chestnut, white, and palomino.

Appaloosas and the Native Americans are part of the true image of western history. Native Americans were considered expert horsemen but only one tribe had the finest horses, The Nez Pearce.

Appaloosas do suffer from a number of inherited disorders. One of these is night blindness, which means they may have trouble seeing in dim or dark light.

They cover the equine color spectrum, except for Appaloosa markings. Most trotters are docile and willing.

One interesting horse in my family, an Appaloosa named Denver Deuce, methodically worked for hours at opening bull-snaps and gate latches until he was free to visit other horses and raid grain rooms.

The first animal mutilation reported by international media was an appaloosa mare named "Lady" found dead and stripped of flesh from the neck up on September 9, 1967 in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado.

In 1971, Frede Nielsen added Appaloosa blood to the Knabstrup in an attempt to recuperate the former glory of the breed. More recently, the Thoroughbred was also called to help.
Still relatively rare, the leopard coated Knabstrup is highly prized.
